Sustainable development
What is sustainable development?
Sustainable development is a model of societal progress that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
On September 25, 2015, the member states of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It includes a set of goals aimed at eliminating poverty, preserving the planet’s resources, and ensuring well-being for all.
At its core, sustainable development is based on a balance among three key elements of the system – ECONOMY, ECOLOGY, and SOCIETY:
- Economy – growth and prosperity without depleting resources.
- Ecology – preservation of the environment and biodiversity.
- Society – equal opportunities, rights, and access to resources.
Sustainable Development Goals
The goal of sustainable development is to create conditions in which people, nature, and the economy coexist in harmony and safety.
The United Nations has adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals designed to guide the efforts of countries and communities toward building a just, safe, and environmentally responsible future. These goals cover key areas of life — from fighting poverty and inequality to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable economic growth. Below are all 17 goals, each playing an important role in creating a harmonious world.
