Bais in Northern Kazakhstan: their place in society, their potential and confiscation of farms
The IRN AR26104469 project is being implemented within the framework of grant financing for 2025-2027 by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Project manager: Temirkhanova A. S., PhD, Associate Professor of the Department of History of Kazakhstan and Law, (https://orcid.org/ 0000-0002-3231-5141. Scopus ID: 57195783015).
Project executors: Malikova S.Z., Taishibai Z.S., Mukhamedzhanova G.T., Isakaeva A.M.
Implementation period: 01.01.2025 – 31.12.2027
Total amount of financing: 87 455 846 tenge.
Project objective: Conducting historical research aimed at studying the situation and socio-economic potential of the Kazakh affluent segments of the population of the northern region of Kazakhstan, the processes of their identification and confiscation of property, the violent destruction of the traditional Kazakh economic system in Northern Kazakhstan, as well as the prerequisites, course and consequences of the collectivization campaign, including obtaining and systematizing new scientific data on the causes and extent of famine among the local population.
Expected results: This article will analyze and provide a scientific assessment of the goals, progress, and consequences of Stalin's totalitarian rule in Northern Kazakhstan, which included the elimination of the rich and middle-class Kazakh farmers and the collectivization of agriculture in accordance with the requirements of barracks socialism. The study and preservation of ancestral heritage will help unlock the regions' potential as additional drivers of economic growth.
Project Description: The main source base of the research consists of archival documents, collections of statistical and reference data, reviews, memoirs and articles of famous public figures, as well as printed publications of the relevant historical period, thematic documents and specialized collections. During the study of the confiscation campaign against Kazakh farmers, it is planned to identify and analyze archival documents reflecting the facts of distortion and incorrect execution of instructions from the highest authorities by local administrative structures. The results of the research project can be used in the preparation of monographs on the history of Kazakhstan, the history of the North Kazakhstan region and local history. The materials obtained are also applicable in the development of scientific publications, training courses and teaching aids, as well as as a source of new scientific knowledge for educational and reference publications on the history of historical science, the history of the state, cultural studies, local history, geography and other related disciplines, which emphasizes the interdisciplinary importance of the implemented program.
