International Study Experience: Students Share the Results of a Semester at the University of Arizona

*]:pointer-events-auto scroll-mt-"> Twenty-nine students enrolled in double-degree programs jointly offered with the University of Arizona have successfully completed a semester of study in the United States and returned home. Today, they met with the university administration, students, and faculty members, as well as city school students and employers. The students shared their impressions of studying in America, spoke about their daily routine on campus, the challenges they faced, and the opportunities that studying in an international environment opened up for them. “The University of Arizona is ranked among the top 50 universities in the United States and 102nd in the world. The campus itself is a vast area that makes up a significant part of the city of Tucson. We spent 50 hours traveling and covered 18,500 kilometers. It was an unforgettable journey that left us with many positive emotions and enriched us with new knowledge. We not only studied and conducted research, but also relaxed and traveled,” shared fourth-year student Amir Agzamov. Kozybayev University became the first university in Kazakhstan to begin implementing the directive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2022 to open branches of leading foreign universities in the country. Over this time, the collaboration project with the University of Arizona has proven its effectiveness. Today, around 1,200 students from all regions of Kazakhstan, as well as from the USA, Russia, China, and other countries, are studying in 5 double-degree and 11 joint educational programs. Double-degree students study entirely in English on grants (for Kazakhstani students). One of the requirements is a semester spent at the main campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson. All expenses related to the educational process were covered by Kozybayev University. The university paid for tuition, accommodation in on-campus dormitories, medical insurance, round-trip airfare, as well as visa and consular fees. This financial support allowed students to fully focus on their studies, research and project activities, and to successfully adapt to the academic and cultural environment. The students were divided into two groups depending on their academic program: 20 students studied in the IT field (“Information Systems in Management”), while the others pursued the “Biotechnology” program. Chairman of the Executive Board - Rector Yerbol Issakaev congratulated the students on the successful completion of the semester: “Studying at the main campus of the University of Arizona is, in essence, a test of maturity—academic, personal, and organizational. And our first students passed this test with distinction. They found themselves in a different academic environment, with a faster pace, greater independence, higher standards of academic integrity, and a stronger emphasis on communication and teamwork. They saw firsthand how modern university services are organized, how research infrastructure functions, and how professional culture is formed. They returned with experience that provides a real advantage both in their studies and in their future careers. Study Arizona is not ‘just a trip.’ It is the next level of quality requirements in education. Dear students, you are living proof that our programs deliver real international experience and real competencies. Your example sets a new standard for the university: to study at the level of global standards, expand horizons, and return stronger—to strengthen the university, the region, and the country.” Twenty-nine students enrolled in double-degree programs jointly offered with the University of Arizona have successfully completed a semester of study in the United States and returned home. Exchange, Recycling, and Environmental Care: “Darmarka” Takes Place at Kozybayev University

An eco-fair titled “Darmarka” is being held at Kozybayev University, aimed at fostering a culture of conscious consumption and responsible attitudes toward the environment, in line with the core principles of the nationwide “Taza Qazaqstan” campaign. The initiative is organized jointly with the Association of Environmental Organizations of Kazakhstan, with the support of the Bolashaq branch of the Amanat Party, within the framework of the social project StopMusor. Darmarka is an environmentally friendly event where city residents can bring unwanted but good-quality items free of charge and take items left by others. It is a space for exchange that promotes reuse, waste reduction, and the conservation of natural resources. This approach helps develop social and environmental responsibility and encourages careful treatment of the environment. Students, volunteers, faculty members, and university staff actively participated in the event, along with about 120 schoolchildren and teachers from six city schools, lyceums, and gymnasiums. What can be brought to Darmarka? - clean, wearable clothing;- books (not torn);- toys (clean and not broken), etc. As part of the initiative, a collection of plastic bottles marked 1 and 2 (PET, HDPE) is also being organized. “For the second year in a row, the Department of Geography and Ecology has been holding this initiative within our university. Items can be exchanged or simply left. On the final day, we collect everything that remains and donate it to organizations in need, such as the ‘Mother’s Home.’ The plastic is collected and sent to Raduga KDR for further recycling,” said Asel Bektemirova, Associate Professor of the Department of Geography and Ecology. Darmarka is taking place from January 27 to 30, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the educational and laboratory building. You still have time to take part!

Students Informed About the Legal Consequences of Bullying, Extortion, and Gambling

As part of the “Law and Order” ideology, a meeting was held at the university between students and officers of the North Kazakhstan Region Police Department to discuss issues related to the prevention of offenses among students. The event was aimed at raising young people’s legal awareness, promoting compliance with safety rules, and preventing bullying and extortion. Students were informed that actions such as threats, intimidation of others, and participation in gambling can lead to serious consequences. They were also advised on what measures should be taken if they encounter such situations. “In modern society, phenomena such as bullying, gambling addiction, and extortion are quite common. Through social media, recruitment schemes are widely spread, promising high earnings. Human trafficking carries criminal liability of up to 15 years’ imprisonment. Analysis shows that such crimes are most often committed by organized criminal groups. Women and minors are usually the victims,” noted Ayakoz Baimenova, Major of Police and operational officer of the Unit for Combating Human Trafficking. Students received useful legal information on pressing issues, including criminal offenses and the legal consequences of extortion.

FROM AULS TO MEGACITIES: KOZYBAYEV UNIVERSITY SUPPORTS YOUTH OF SOUTHERN KAZAKHSTAN

Kozybayev University has launched a large-scale career guidance campaign for more than 10,000 school students in southern Kazakhstan. In the Kyzylorda and Turkestan regions, the university team visited 25 localities - from major cities such as Shymkent, Turkestan, and Kyzylorda to small auls. Graduates of schools and colleges received comprehensive information about admission to the university, study conditions, and accommodation in student dormitories. Notably, thanks to the opening of two modern Student Houses at Kozybayev University, accommodation coverage for non-resident students has reached 100%, with even a surplus of available places. In addition, the campus is equipped with a new academic and laboratory building, modern coworking centers, and all the necessary facilities to ensure high-quality education. Prospective students and their parents were also consulted on relocation to Petropavl under the Serpin program, as well as on accommodation and adaptation issues. Currently, more than 150 students are enrolled at Kozybayev University within this program area. In 2024, a regional project office, Serpin Qoldau, was established at the university, bringing together all relevant government bodies. The office conducts profiling, training sessions, language courses, psychological adaptation programs, and supports cultural integration. Third- and fourth-year students are directed to dual education programs and provided with further support until the conclusion of individual employment contracts. To facilitate employment, memorandums have also been signed with the largest employers of the North Kazakhstan region. In addition, the university currently provides temporary dormitory accommodation to graduates of the program. During meetings with school students, special attention was also given to presenting dual-degree educational programs offered jointly with the University of Arizona in the following fields: Information Systems in Management, Biotechnology, Inclusive Education, Business, and Management. This career guidance initiative is an important step toward opening up opportunities for young people from the southern regions of Kazakhstan to access high-quality higher education and pursue professional development at the international level.
